Walking through History


West Yorkshire has a plethora of stately homes , industrial archeology and historic churches . When Tony organises a walk we often come across these historical gems.
Harewood  House
This house built was in the Paladian style in the 18th century. The grounds were created by Capability Brown.There are numerous follies ,lakes and rolling parkland . The house is near Leeds and is open to the public but is privately owned.

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal

Built in the 18th century this canal links Yorkshire and Lancashire by the longest canal tunnel in the UK. The barge is being lowered  by using a lock gate.



Abandoned farmhouse above Hebden Bridge
We come across a lot of derelict farmhouse on the Pennine moors. It must have been a hard life!

Gibsons Mill above Hebden Bridge

This watermill was built in 1800 to spin cotton. It is looked after by The National Trust and is open to the public.

Harewood House Church

This 15th century alabaster tomb of a medieval knightand his lady are one of a number located in the church.

Tony can be seen walking towards another ruined farmhouse above Holmfirth.

Cannon Hall
The hall and grounds are owned by Barnsley Council and are open to the public.It was built in the 18th century largely on the back of the slave trade.

Wentworth Woodhouse
Built in the 19th century this is the largest privately owned country house in Europe. The wealth came from coal and it has more rooms then Buckingham Palace.

This massive machine can be found north of Leeds at St Aidens country park a former opencaste coalmine.

The fastest legger
A 100 years ago a Hamlet called Hades existed here until most of it disappeared under Holmestyes  Reservoir .The picture was taken on a very misty morning.

The bull ring


We noticed this circular feature highlighted by the snow near Digley reservoir just outside Holmfirth on 17th of March 2018.Roger decided to send the picture to the Yorkshire archeological trust. They said it was a late prehistoric enclosed settlement and is a scheduled national monument which has never been excavated.We felt like Time team!

This church is medieval dating back to the 1290s

The second carving

At the back of the church are 9 headstones dated very early 1800s each with a Maltese cross.We found out that they are the graves of nuns who moved from France in 1792 to live at Heath.








The top of West Nab is one of the highest points in the Pennines
The large number of rocks covering the hill top is a result of glaciation during the last ice age



This is one of the few rocks leading up to West Nab which is upright. It is called the Cock Crowing St but there is no other evidence to be found of its history.
This new fish ladder enables fish to access the upper reaches of the Don for the first time in 100 years

Chatsworth house was started in the 16th century by the Cavendish family and is regarded as one of the finest Stately homes in England
